DIAGNOSTICS

We perform diagnostics on both live and dead wild animals. We try to diagnose the cause of the disease as quickly as possible and we give advice on treatment and control. Diagnostics in live animals is limited to second-line support of Wildlife Rescue Centers (VOCs) .

In addition, an explanation is sought for (mass) mortality events or disease outbreaks by means of an necropsy on dead animals . This is done through a macroscopic and microscopic assessment of the tissues. If necessary, further investigations (bacteriological, virological, parasitological or toxicological) are performed (see SURVEILLANCE). Based on the knowledge of the cause of death, advice is given linked to the prevention and control of the disease.

Finally, we also perform molecular diagnostic tests for the diagnosis of chytridiomycosis (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis and Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans), ranavirosis, snake fungal disease (Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola), mycoplasma, chlamydia, polyomavirus, circovirus, herpes, helicobacter, campylobacter and PBFD virus. An application form is required when sending a sample! Find a blank application form and more information about sending a sample here.
